Trivia!

This color became popular in the late eighteenth century, despite being named for a pest.

    2. Woot! I remember reading about puce in "Queen of Fashion." My mother had told me about the color when I was little, and I always thought it had an ugly name, but neither she nor I knew it meant "flea."

  2. I like that there were different shades of Puce including for the belly of the flea etc which means it can range from a fawn brown to a pinky colour. Totally cracked me up!

  3. Puce! I've seen the derivation/description given as both the color of a bloody squished flea, or the color of a flea that's engorged with blood. It's shown as browner than I generally envision it in this fashion plate.
